I have been so eager to share with you all our custom table created by the amazing Barns 2 Home. As the name suggests, Barns 2 Home takes reclaimed barn wood and creates unique pieces for your home.  I was all in with this company when I heard about Barns 2 Home’s mission to “save one million trees.” In working with reclaimed barn wood, they positively impact our environment by decreasing the demand for new lumber. But their craft is what has truly impressed me. When our table arrived, I was blown away with how their team captured our vision. It was like the table had been there all along, it just fit perfectly.

The wood is rich with character, color and attention to detail. Simply put, it’s nothing like you could ever buy in a store. Our home remodel has taken years, and we are still in the process of adding finishing touches along the way. This table has added so much charm to our living room, I stare at it every time I walk by!

We are so pleased with our table and the character it adds to our space. It’s a great feeling to be contributing to Barns 2 Home’s mission of environmental stewardship. But perhaps more exciting is how incredible this work of art looks in our home! Barns 2 Home also supplies re-purposed barn wood, but I think the real magic is in their unique creations. They work with you every step of the way in designing and building custom décor and furniture.  I already have thoughts of designing a gorgeous kids table for arts and crafts!

I cannot rave about Barns 2 Home enough. Be sure to check them out and get started on building your custom piece today!

A visit to Roche Harbor on San Juan Islands. A must see in Washington State, Seattle area!

A few weeks back we had the most incredible family trip to the San Juan Islands! One of my oldest and dearest friends, Britta, got hitched in dreamland! The wedding took place in the garden of the Roche Harbor Resort on San Juan Island. I was fortunate enough to be one of Britta’s bridesmaids.  From Seattle, the San Juans are a few hours drive North and a quick ferry ride. So that made it two ferry rides for us coming from Bainbridge Island! We stayed on the North end of the island in Roche Harbor. Roche is full of historical charm, and the most incredible gardens. I mean just look at that trellis of roses! I keep telling Jeff how I’d like to repeat this trip annually! Above are some of my favorite snaps from my iPhone that we took on the trip.

We stayed in a cozy condo through the Roche Harbor Resort. Julian got to feed the deer every morning from our deck, as we soaked in the view of the harbor. We loved eating breakfast at the Lime Kiln Cafe (the donuts!) and walking around the docks looking at all the gorgeous boats. While I had the chance to get pampered as a bridesmaid, Jules and Jeff hit up the warm outdoor pool. I’ll never forget how happy Jules was cutting a rug on the dance floor! And he’s now obsessed with “cheers-ing” glasses after watching all of the wedding toasts. It’s seriously the cutest!

My friend is not a social media fan, so I wanted to respect her privacy by not putting her wedding photos on blast here! But holy cow, it should be featured in Martha Stewart Weddings if you ask me. And our bridesmaid’s dresses were out of this world pretty! Perfect dress to accommodate the growing bump too.

If you’ve never been to the San Juans, it is a Washington State must see! Friday Harbor is gorgeous, but Roche Harbor has my heart! Seriously, the rose trellis you guys! Adieu!

Heidi

As I near the end of my pregnancy my energy level is plummeting! Which is a bummer because I still have a zillion things to do to get ready to meet our baby girl! You know, like decorate her room! I had intended on sharing with you all this amazing lemon bar recipe I made recently. I made it for a BBQ we hosted and it was a hit! Julian had more then I’d like to confess. But I’m just too tired to recreate the dish and photograph it. So, I’m just going to build a mountain of suspense over lemon bars. And instead, share with you a little behind the scenes from last week on my Instagram, including a few fun outfits that I wore!

I’ve mentioned this before on my Instagram account, but I think it’s worth mentioning here. I have found maternity fashion to be very challenging for me. A lot of the items I would try on would leave me feeling HUGE and not so excited about being pregnant. Over time, I found that wear more bump hugging outfits was actually really flattering. I’m normally not one for a curve hugging, body-con dress. But I found that they suit me in pregnancy, so I’ve been running with it!

Also, a ton of the items I’m wearing are on sale now through the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! The sale lasts until August 6th, and I’ve already missed out on a few items that I was lusting over. So, hop on it and snag your favorites. Hope you enjoyed these looks that I wore last week! Follow along for more on instagram: @heidi.stephens.

Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Sharing honest struggles about pregnancy illness and battling hyperemesis gravidarum in pregnancy from vomiting to depression in pregnancy. Seeing the beauty in motherhood. (Dress: Etsy; Custom Hair Piece: The Botanist Co; Photography by Janet Lin Photography)

When my dear friend and photographer Janet and I set out to do this photoshoot, I was already eager to share the photos with you all! I was thinking to myself how I would tell you all about how this is the perfect dress for a maternity shoot (true) and how wonderful and easy Janet is to work with (absolutely true)! And about how I was so excited to finally do a beach shoot on beautiful Bainbridge Island (true again)! But when Janet sent me photos I became overwhelmed by something else, and I wanted to share that with you instead. I felt overwhelmed with guilt.

Let me explain. During my pregnancy, I have battled hyperemesis gravidarum and have spoken candidly about how that has effected my life. From the non-strop vomiting, and all the way into an anti-nausea medication induced depression. After I had Julian and I looked back on my pregnancy, I would think to myself, “well of course you didn’t really enjoy it! You were miserable!” But in the moment, being pregnant, it is so hard to offer myself that same kind of grace. So, what do I feel, but guilt. Guilt for not loving and embracing pregnancy.  Guilt, for the days that I despised it.

I look at these photos and I feel like I can see myself in a different light. I can see the beauty of pregnancy. The miracle of it. The edges have been smoothed. And I feel guilt for not seeing it sooner.

That is so hard for me to say. I do not by any means want to seem ungrateful for the daughter that is growing inside of me. I am very aware that pregnancy loss and infertility are something that many women struggle with. Women I know personally and those I do not know. Even my dear friend Janet has experienced great loss as a mother and written beautifully about it. And so, the guilt over not loving pregnancy keeps piling on.

I am blessed beyond measure for my daughter. And I need to come to terms with the fact that pregnancy is not easy for me. That yes, on somedays I cried to my husband that I couldn’t do it anymore. That I wanted my old life back. And the worst, that I didn’t want to be pregnant anymore. I have tears in my eyes as I type that because it breaks my heart to confess how dark things were for me. But it is the truth.

Offering yourself grace is not always simple. And I think we as women struggle with it particularly. So, I am vowing to see myself and my pregnancy differently. I am choosing to see myself and my experience through a different lens, and to embrace it from here on out. Even if that’s just a few more weeks. I’m choosing to embrace it for the joy and the miracle that it is. But, I am also choosing to accept the darkness of those first 6 months. And to not feel the guilt and weight of them any longer.

Moms, you don’t have to love pregnancy.  You don’t even have to like it to still be grateful and appreciative of its gifts. But you don’t have to feel guilty for feeling the way you do. Feel what you feel, and remember that, like most things, this too shall pass. Sending love and grace to all.

Heidi

Well hello third trimester! Took you long enough. Everyone says the second pregnancy breezes by because you’re so busy with your older child. But, for me, it still feels like eternity! I wanted to share with you all this gorgeous shoot I did with some insanely talented creatives. I have loved the look of these milk bath shoot since I was pregnant with Julian. So, I couldn’t wait to get my feet wet this pregnancy. I know, I’m hilarious. Arturo Garza Photography was the genius behind the lens. Fraîche Face was a goddess with my soft hair and my all natural makeup, and Rusted Vase created the most heavenly wreath of flowers. Admittedly, I am the worst about printing photos, but these inspire me to get on it! I’d love to have one for our baby girl’s nursery.

I also wanted to take a minute to update you all on how this pregnancy is treating me lately. It’s been some time since I confessed about the challenges I was facing in the first two thirds of my pregnancy. I’m happy to report that I have been feeling worlds better for the past month. I haven’t thrown up in about a month, since I attempted to get off of my anti-nausea meds. Bad move on my part!

I have a ton more energy, and have been successfully keeping up at work (as best I can!) Still attempting to figure out the whole home/work/life balance, but of course I’m not holding my breath on that one. I don’t need to sleep all day anymore, and I can even eat a vegetable every now and then. While I’m not going on daily walks, or doing yoga, like I had hoped, I am giving myself some grace. I know that soon enough my health will be back to normal, and our sweet baby girl will be here with us! She is a super active gal already and a crazy kicker in my belly. I cannot wait to see what her personality will be like in a few months.

As always, thanks for stopping and thanks for all the love. Wishing you a happy Friday everyone!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already May, let alone that Mother’s Day is just around the corner! My mom and I are both nurses with odd and hectic work schedules, so we decided to celebrate Mother’s Day early this year. I hosted a brunch at our home and had a little too much fun planning it all! I decided to go all out to show my mom how much she is loved and appreciated. You can never say it enough! A color palette of soft blush pinks, whites and creams created a feminine look and to emphasis that the brunch really was all about mom! Sticking to a color palette can help an event look cohesive and more put together.

I love having the opportunity to celebrate my loved ones and this brunch ended up being a huge hit! Here’s a peek at last year’s event. Instead of just sharing the recipes with you all (although I will do that too) I thought it would be fun to highlight how I pulled off the event while being a working mama with a toddler! It is my hope that you can use some of these tips and tricks for your Mother’s Day celebration this weekend! And some of the delicious recipes too! Motherhood truly is the best and most important “job” in the world. Mamas deserve to be celebrated!

  1. Plan ahead. Brainstorm your color palette, theme or general ideas early on. This will help when making decisions on the event. Sometimes I would get a little overzealous while planning, but my original idea of a simple and feminine brunch would reground me. I love Pinterest for this purpose. I had been working on a Mother’s Day Pinterest board for a few weeks prior to the brunch. Have a menu in place a few days to a week before your event. This helps with delegation, and grocery shopping. People often ask me how I have time to bake, and one of my secrets is I always do my shopping and prep work the day before! Baking then becomes a breeze.
  2. Cater to your mama. Seems pretty obvious, right? But I’ve found that making the extra effort to tailor an event towards your guest of honor can make a world of difference. For example, my mom doesn’t drink alcohol. So instead of just sticking her with water while everyone else drank mimosas, I crafted a delicious raspberry lemonade spritzer for her to enjoy. I also was sure to make a playlist of her favorite music. Even something as simple as incorporating their favorite foods into the menu is a special touch. It sets the tone that the event is in her honor!
  3. Use seasonal blooms. Flowers can make your event! I decided to use the gorgeous tulips in our front yard to set the scene for our tablescape. Luckily for me we had lots of pretty pink blooms to choose from. Fresh florals really can transform your space.
  4. Incorporate a sentimental touch. Since this Mother’s Day brunch was in honor of my wonderful mom, I wanted to add a heartfelt touch to the event. I opted to use my Grandmother’s china teacups for each table setting. It was a big surprise to my mom, and she was so grateful to see her mother’s china being put to good use. I also love the idea of incorporating old photos into each place setting too. Again, my Pinterest board has some great inspiration!
  5. Keep food simple and seasonal. When developing the menu for our Mother’s Day brunch I kept things simple and fresh. This meant incorporating springtime fruits and veggies to pay homage to our changing seasons. A light orange bundt cake with a simple orange glaze (I just mixed 1 cup powdered sugar and 2 Tbsp orange juice for the glaze) was a huge hit. We ate fresh waffles topped with a homemade whipped cream (1 cup heavy cream, 2 Tbsp sugar and 1 tsp vanilla whipped together). We then rounded out the menu with a roasted pepper frittata topped with heirloom tomatoes and we had plenty of Hempler’s bacon to enjoy! Simple menus always speak for themselves.

If you caught my Spring To-Do List a few weeks back, then you know that visiting the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington was number 1 on my list! I still remember the amazement I would feel every year after returning to UW following spring break. The quad would be filled with these stunning blooms and you could feel the magic in the air. It also meant that summer was just one quarter away!

Every year the UW announces an estimated time when the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom. You can even watch it on live stream! This year we visited in the first week of April. My friend and photographer Whitney, who took these amazing photos just before the sun set and the rain began to fall.

I was so excited to be able to share this beautiful sight with Julian this year. Since we live on Bainbridge Island, we caught the ferry boat over to the Emerald City. We strolled through campus, and I swear it must have looked like Disneyland to my one year old! You could see the amazement in his eyes! He ran around and played in the fallen petals and jumped in every mud puddle. It was nostalgic to visit UW again, and these beautiful blooms were exactly as I remembered.

Wherever you may be in the world, the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington are a site you must see with your own eyes. Living in Washington state, spring has always felt like a season of renewal and new energy for me. Fresh blooms, bluer skies, and lighter rainfall are all welcomed warmly after the winter months. The frogs and ducks return to their ponds and all of your friends come out of hibernation. Hey guys! Springtime in Seattle is pure magic, and I hope that you get a chance to see the cherry blossoms for yourself sometime soon! The blooms never last long, so be sure to time it right!

Also, if you’re on or near Bainbridge Island, you must check out Magnolia Shoes where this dress is from! I am obsessed with how soft this fabric is, I could sleep in these dress!

Huge thank you to Whitney Coudray Photography for the photos. I cherish these and so many more that I didn’t post 🙂

In case that beautiful pink frosting didn’t give it away already, we are having a GIRL!!! Jeff and I have always said we didn’t care either way, boy or girl, as long as the baby was healthy. But we had both talked at length at how wonderful it would be to have a sweet little girl. And I must say, I am pretty excited that we will have a son and a daughter. I can already imagine taking her to ballet class and braiding her hair. And I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m excited about the little girl clothes! This is the first baby girl on my mom’s side of the family since I was born; we have 7 busy boys! And Jeff is one of three sons! Needless to say, our parents are pretty excited about the news of a girl!

Knowing the gender always makes pregnancy feel more real for me. I could never wait to be surprised at delivery! I hate surprises! Something shifted for me that day we found out the gender, and this pregnancy became more exciting than ever. Because of all of the hardships of my pregnancy, knowing that we are having a healthy baby girl has been the boost I needed to conquer the second half of this journey.

I am looking forward to meeting our sweet little girl more than I can say. And there is a certain excitement about seeing my husband become a father to a baby girl that I can’t even explain! I know that Julian will be an amazing big brother because I see the way he treats other babies and animals with such kindness. Our sweet baby girl is so loved already. And so many of you guessed right that we would be having a girl! You guys are good! Thank you for stopping by to read about our exciting news! Much love to you all.

xx,

Heidi
