18 for 2018: My Resolutions for the Year

18 ways to better yourself in 2018. Habits to start that are worth keeping for happiness and abundance in the New Year. Clean, made bed in a peaceful and serene bedroom. -Heidi Stephens, Bainbridge Boheme

In December I was listening to The Happier Podcast, and decided to join in on their 18 for 2018 challenge. The idea is that you create a list of 18 things you’d like to accomplish in the next year. They aren’t all resolutions. Many are one-time bucket list items that you can easily check off once complete. But others are daily resolutions to uphold year long.

Initially, I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about sharing my resolutions and my list on here. After all, resolutions can be deeply personal. However, I have been feeling some incredible changes in my life because of my simple list. I would be remiss not to share.

It’s not lost on me that I’m only two weeks into upholding these “resolutions.” But when I started this blog I wanted it to be a space to share my thoughts and experience with others. If I didn’t want to share, I would have just written in a journal, or a typed out a Word document that was never published. This list has already made such a positive impact on my days, I had to share.

  1. Swim with fish. I have a deep-rooted love and fear of sharks, so I have never been snorkeling.
  2. Bake healthy. I love sweets (obviously) but I don’t always love the way I feel after eating them.
  3. Make bed every morning. I used to be so good at this! It sets the tone for the whole day.
  4. Find the perfect diet for me. Not diet, diet. But diet as in what I eat. I think I’ve found it, and I’ll explain more on that in a separate post.
  5. Learn to braid hair. How do I not yet know how to French braid?
  6. Teach Julian to swim.
  7. Send a letter once a month.
  8. Perfect one signature dish for dinner.
  9. Write in Inez’s baby book. Here’s Inez’s book.
  10. Print family photos.
  11. Celebrate anniversary. This should be a no-brainer, but Jeff and I have not done it once. I have been sick and pregnant for nearly every anniversary, or he has been out at sea.
  12. Pause. Listen.
  13. Practice gratitude daily. I love this journal
  14. Go to the library at least once a month.
  15. Spend a full day at a spa.
  16. Practice spirituality. Find exactly what that means to you. Don’t be so darn squeamish to admit that you believe in something greater than yourself. (This has been the hardest and most rewarding of all.)
  17. Wear sunscreen everyday.
  18. No phone in the bedroom. This one has brought me the most immediate result of happiness. I sleep better. I am on my phone a whole lot less. I am focused on my family and myself. No longer staying up until 11pm reading how Chrissy Teigen claps back to Twitter trolls. *This has also been the reason I’ve been on social media and the blog less lately. And it feels so good.*

I would love to hear what your lists are. Or even just what’s at the top of your list. Are you sticking to your resolutions? I hope they are ones that are bringing you joy and abundance in this New Year!

xx,

Heidi

Our Family Christmas Card 2017

Our 2017 family Christmas cards from Minted. I love the gold foil

Our 2017 family Christmas cards from Minted. I love the gold foil

Merry Christmas to you and yours! This year has been filled with such joy and love for our little family. It’s amazing how much can change in a year. Just take a peek back at our 2016 Christmas card! A little family of three, not yet knowing what was on the way.

Here is this year’s family Christmas card from my favorite design hub, Minted. I love how Whitney Coudray Photography captured our family and most of all, how those photos helped us to share our joy through a simple card. Our shoot at a local Christmas Tree Farm was what Christmas dreams are made of! I know the holidays can feel stressful for many of us. But sending and receiving holiday cards is one of my favorite traditions of this season. I read every card we receive and feel such warmth from them. I suppose this is my little way of sending you all a Christmas card.

Wishing you blessings and joy on this wonderful holiday. Merry Christmas to all!

There’s no place like home for the holidays! I wanted to share a few snapshots of our home during this Christmas season. Last year I went all out, but this year with the two babies I have been forced to slow down a bit more. And I can’t say that I mind! We’ve been busy decorating and listening to Jingle Bells on repeat. It’s Julian’s favorite, and he asks for it all. day. long. And I just can’t deny the man his favorite song!

I like to create cozy spaces in our home, like my little Christmas window nook. It’s so fun how a simple wreath, or a holiday candle can transform an everyday space. I also wanted to give Julian’s room a little Christmas spirit this year now that he is older. He was so thrilled to see that wreath in his room! Every time I put him down for bed he points it out and says “Julian’s wreath!” When he sees our Christmas tree first thing in the morning it’s “lights on! Star on it! Ornaments!” The joy of Christmas through the eyes of a child is pure magic.

How do you style your home for the holidays? I’d love to know! Leave me a comment below!

Great Gift Ideas for the Home

The ultimate gift guide for gifts for the home this Christmas! Perfect host and hostess gifts that everyone can enjoy around their home this holiday season. Heidi Stephens, Bainbridge Boheme

Can hardly believe Christmas is right around the corner! Gifts for the home are always at the top of my list. I know that every time I use our beautiful salad bowl (very similar to the one linked above), I think of my dear friend Joanna who gifted it to me. I like to think that all gifts can carry sentiments towards the giver. That’s why gifting for someone’s home can be so fun. Plus, you don’t have to worry about sizes, hehe.

These are a few of the items I am eyeing for Christmas gifts this year. And a few I’ve already picked up for some lucky friends. Michael Buble’s “The More You Give (The More You Have)” had shopping in mind right?

Tis the season! Happy shopping!

12 Children’s Books for the Month of December

Best Christmas books for toddlers, and babies. Your kiddos will love these timeless tales of the Christmas season! Heidi Stephens, Bainbridge Boheme

Best Christmas books for toddlers, and babies. Your kiddos will love these timeless tales of the Christmas season! Heidi Stephens, Bainbridge Boheme

Seeing the joy of the holidays through a child’s eyes is pure magic. Teaching Julian about Christmas and the winter season has brought so much excitement for me about the upcoming holiday. We are in full holiday swing at our place, and a huge part of that has been pulling out all of our holiday books for the kiddos.

All of these books are ones that are sure to warm the hearts of adults and children alike. Julian is partial to Little Blue Truck’s Christmas right now, because he loves how the Christmas tree lights up on the last page! And I love that it teaches him to count along throughout the pages. Dream Snow is another beautiful choice that is great for counting and learning about animals. Plus, it’s a lift the flap!

One of the prettiest tales, The Message of the Birds, also has the most powerful message. It is a message of peace and how children can help to spread that message and bring us peace on earth. But of course, no list is complete without the classic poem of The Night Before Christmas. I bought this copy one Christmas to read to my future children before I had even become a mother. I know that sounds crazy, I know! It is just one of those books that has that power to become an instant family tradition and hold endless holiday memories. And I couldn’t wait to create those moments with my own family someday.

I hope that these books bring the joy of the season into your homes and into your children’s eyes. It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

Festive Pajamas To Wear All December Long

Best cozy and festive holiday pajamas! Love celebrating the season with Christmas and winter themed PJs! Heidi Stephens, Bainbridge Boheme

Sweater: H&M // PJ Bottoms: Old Navy (only $14!) // Slippers: Ugg

Ahhh, there’s nothing better than cozying up in your PJ’s in the winter. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite jammies that would be perfect for Christmas morning and all December long! My mom would always buy us kids Christmas PJ’s to open on Christmas Eve and I loved waking up on Christmas day in my festive PJ’s. As a mom to a newborn, I consider myself to be an expert pajama wearer these days. Exhibit A. Exhibit B.

PJ’s always make for a great Christmas gift, and an indulgent gift for yourself. Afterall, they promise a cozy nights sleep! And who can’t get behind that?!

I also wanted to say, thank you so much to all of you for your sweet birthday messages and comments yesterday. You made my day even brighter.
