Dress: ASOS, similar here and non-maternity here // Julain’s Shirt: Gap, Shorts: Zara sold out

It’s just a matter of days now before we get to meet our sweet baby girl. I have been feeling excited and anxious all at the same time. I cannot wait to meet our baby and hold her in my arms. I imagine her to look like Julian, who at birth looked just like Jeff. I must say, part of me is a little nervous about having a one year old and a newborn! Any advice from you two-under-two mamas? I need all the tips I can get! Here are some fun tidbits about my pregnancy that I’ve never shared before!

How I discovered I was pregnant: It was just a week before Christmas and I went to Seattle to meet one of my best friend’s for a fun girls day. Jesse and I grew up together and now both have babies the same age. We started talking about how we were both feeling so bloated and sluggish after way too many holiday treats. Then we started talking about when we may try for baby number 2. After saying goodbye to Jess I walked back to the ferry boat thinking about our conversations. On a whim I bought a pregnancy test before hopping on the ferry. I took the test on the ferry ride home (so glam) and sure enough, it was POSITIVE! The best part is that Jesse took a test the very next day (not knowing about mine yet) and hers was positive too!

Who knew first: I called my sister that day to tell her the news! I wanted to surprise Jeff in a fun way, so I need my sis by my side to help craft a plan! Jesse knew right away, as well as our dear friend Ashley, who also discovered she was pregnant just days later! We could not have planned that if we tried!

How I told Jeff: On the morning of Christmas Eve I had Jeff open a very special Christmas present. I wrapped up 4 beautiful red Christmas ornaments with hand painted gold calligraphy reading; Jeff, Heidi, Jules and Baby. Jeff was so excited and shocked and over the moon all at the same time! We told the rest of our families then next day. Best Christmas ever.

How I felt: For the majority of the pregnancy I felt miserable. I’ve spoken candidly about that here and here. But as the end nears I feel healthy and excited. Albeit very tired and enormous.

What I craved: Carbs! Pizza, mac & cheese, lasagna! Also, fresh fruits like watermelon and strawberries. Any vegetable I saw would make me nauseous. If I could eat Molly Moon’s Salted Caramel ice cream daily, I would.

Greatest fear: This may sound silly, but I am just uncertain about what it will be like to have a baby that is not Julian. Jules and I get along like two peas in a pod. He’s truly my buddy. So I have a hard time imaging what it will be like to parent a baby that isn’t Jules. I keep saying things like “oh I hope she’s like her brother!” But of course she will have her own unique personality to bring to our family. One that deep down I know I will love. Even if she’s the exact opposite of her brother! I remember having the same fear of the unknown before delivering my Julian, and now he has my whole heart.

Greatest joy: Few things compare to that initial ultrasound when you fear baby’s heartbeat for the first time! But I will say, that as she’s grown, I have come to love her powerful kicks inside my belly. She throws me some zingers that can take my breath away! I am growing a strong girly in this belly of mine.

I am still on cloud nine over these maternity photos by the incredible Taylor Catherine Photography. We shot just before the sun went down on beautiful Vashon Island. The scent of this lavender field was out of this world!

Jeff and I both feel so blessed to be our baby girl’s parents. And she is the luckiest girl in the world to have Julian as her big brother. Just a matter of days now girly.

Heidi

Let’s go mama!

(Gold slides: Nordstrom, Jeans: Ingrid & Isabel, Purse: She In. Julian: Sweater: Hand-me-down, Jeans: Levis, Shoes: Native from Barna and Co)

Last week we had the most relaxing stay at The Lodges on Vashon on beautiful Vashon Island. As you can probably imagine, I love island life! But Vashon is very different from Bainbridge. One of the more obvious reasons is that Vashon can only be accessed by ferry, where as Bainbridge Island also has a bridge leading on and off the island. So, even though it is just a short ferry ride, you feel like you have stepped back in time. Vashon is quiet, picturesque and perfectly tranquil. We were on the island for a very special photo shoot, and I can’t wait to show you more from that shoot soon! Here’s a sneak peek of the location!

Our stay at The Lodges on Vashon was exactly what this tired mama needed. Each lodge is a contemporary oasis. The clean, minimalist aesthetic of each lodge adds to the feeling of tranquility. And personally, made me want to redecorate my house! Marie Kondo would have approved. The outdoor common areas harbor the sense of community that one craves on a small island. Oh, and the outdoor swings! If these don’t make your Instagram then you’re doing it wrong. Boomerang dream come true! Case in point!

We dined at The Hardware Store just a few blocks from The Lodges, then took a scenic drive to Point Robinson Lighthouse. Julian loves being on the beach, and I get such a relaxing feeling being on the water. Vashon is a stunning island, and feels like a throwback in time. It had me wanting to drive around aimlessly all day. If I wasn’t so enormously pregnant I would have loved to have rented a bike and toured more of the island on 2 wheels!

We didn’t end up bringing Jet because of the photoshoot we were doing. However, pups are welcome at The Lodges! I think this is such a wonderful aspect of this venue, since it can be challenging to find accommodations that allow pets! Sorry Jet Pup, next time!

I am so thrilled to be teaming up with The Lodges to offer you guys 20% off for stays from July 3rd– July 13th! Just enter code BOHEME at checkout for your discounted rate. The Lodges are a must if you’re in need a some island time! And who isn’t in need of some island time?

Another BIG Change in a Year Full of Changes

Going back to work as an Emergency Room nurse after maternity leave! All Heart Scrubs and Littman stethoscope

Going back to work as an Emergency Room nurse after maternity leave! All Heart Scrubs and Littman stethoscope

(AllHeart Scrubs: Top and Bottom. Obsessed with this C3 scrub set! Even flattering on a 6 month pregnant lady)

This year has been chalked full of change for our family. Namely, my pregnancy and subsequent pregnancy induced illness. But, as you can probably tell from my scrubs, I am feeling better and have headed back to work! If you know me personally, or read the blog (like this fun post) you know that before having Julian, I worked as an Emergency Room Nurse at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital. I have always been an advocate for veterans, and loved my years at the VA. I am excited to announce that I am back at work in the ER!

Like many working moms, making the decision to return to work was extremely challenging for me. At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, I wholeheartedly LOVED being a stay at home mom. I found it to be the most rewarding, heartfelt and entertaining job I’ve ever had. Many people have told me “I bet you can’t wait to be back in the real world!” But for me, being a stay at home mom was my real world. It was my whole world! And it was a “job” that I took very seriously, a job that (dare I say) I excelled at. I genuinely loved it, and Julian loved having me home, and I am grateful for that. The decision to return to work was not made lightly. But nursing is a wonderful and evolving profession, and I want to keep my skills and my license up to date.

One of the greatest obstacles with returning to work is the time spent away from Julian. I am immensely grateful that I was able to be a stay at home mother for the first year of Julian’s life. So, I am nervous that I will be missing Jules and my old SAHM gig like crazy. I’m also incredibly nervous about how I will continue to feel day to day in dealing with my pregnancy illness: hyperemesis gravidarum. Wasn’t pregnant when I applied for the job! But the bottomline is that I am excited about my return to nursing and I now have the utmost of respect for all you mamas doing this juggle.

As you can imagine, this will mean a few changes for the blog. Like always, you can expect the same thoughtful content. I will work my best to bring you posts frequently, however, my posting schedule may need to be reduced depending on how I am able to balance it all. Most of all, time will tell how much I am able to take on, and I am excited for this opportunity to rejoin the workforce. Nursing is a work of the heart, and is much more than just a job. It is one of the few professions that is physically, emotionally and mentally stimulating. I hope that I am able to keep a healthy balance between family, work, blogging and life. Wishful thinking? Wish me luck (and health) everyone!!!

Heidi

If you caught my Spring To-Do List a few weeks back, then you know that visiting the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington was number 1 on my list! I still remember the amazement I would feel every year after returning to UW following spring break. The quad would be filled with these stunning blooms and you could feel the magic in the air. It also meant that summer was just one quarter away!

Every year the UW announces an estimated time when the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom. You can even watch it on live stream! This year we visited in the first week of April. My friend and photographer Whitney, who took these amazing photos just before the sun set and the rain began to fall.

I was so excited to be able to share this beautiful sight with Julian this year. Since we live on Bainbridge Island, we caught the ferry boat over to the Emerald City. We strolled through campus, and I swear it must have looked like Disneyland to my one year old! You could see the amazement in his eyes! He ran around and played in the fallen petals and jumped in every mud puddle. It was nostalgic to visit UW again, and these beautiful blooms were exactly as I remembered.

Wherever you may be in the world, the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington are a site you must see with your own eyes. Living in Washington state, spring has always felt like a season of renewal and new energy for me. Fresh blooms, bluer skies, and lighter rainfall are all welcomed warmly after the winter months. The frogs and ducks return to their ponds and all of your friends come out of hibernation. Hey guys! Springtime in Seattle is pure magic, and I hope that you get a chance to see the cherry blossoms for yourself sometime soon! The blooms never last long, so be sure to time it right!

Also, if you’re on or near Bainbridge Island, you must check out Magnolia Shoes where this dress is from! I am obsessed with how soft this fabric is, I could sleep in these dress!

Huge thank you to Whitney Coudray Photography for the photos. I cherish these and so many more that I didn’t post 🙂

Wanted to pop onto the blog really quick to wish everyone a very Happy Easter! We had the best morning yesterday at Julian’s very first Easter egg hunt. He got to see all of his baby friends and made quite the egg haul with the help of his cousins! Jules would pick up an egg and immediately open it to inspect it’s contents before putting it in his basket. It was so stinking cute! The sun was bright all day, and it made for the perfect Saturday on Bainbridge Island.

I have been anxiously waiting to give Jules his Easter basket for weeks now! Per usual, I was just a tad early in prepping for the holiday. In case you missed it, I posted about his Easter basket here. So excited to see his face when he sets eyes on all of his new goodies! I will be whipping up my lemon ricotta pancakes this morning, and enjoying some family time with my guys. I hope you are doing the same! Wishing you all a Happy Easter and lots of love.

In case that beautiful pink frosting didn’t give it away already, we are having a GIRL!!! Jeff and I have always said we didn’t care either way, boy or girl, as long as the baby was healthy. But we had both talked at length at how wonderful it would be to have a sweet little girl. And I must say, I am pretty excited that we will have a son and a daughter. I can already imagine taking her to ballet class and braiding her hair. And I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m excited about the little girl clothes! This is the first baby girl on my mom’s side of the family since I was born; we have 7 busy boys! And Jeff is one of three sons! Needless to say, our parents are pretty excited about the news of a girl!

Knowing the gender always makes pregnancy feel more real for me. I could never wait to be surprised at delivery! I hate surprises! Something shifted for me that day we found out the gender, and this pregnancy became more exciting than ever. Because of all of the hardships of my pregnancy, knowing that we are having a healthy baby girl has been the boost I needed to conquer the second half of this journey.

I am looking forward to meeting our sweet little girl more than I can say. And there is a certain excitement about seeing my husband become a father to a baby girl that I can’t even explain! I know that Julian will be an amazing big brother because I see the way he treats other babies and animals with such kindness. Our sweet baby girl is so loved already. And so many of you guessed right that we would be having a girl! You guys are good! Thank you for stopping by to read about our exciting news! Much love to you all.

Easter Basket Ideas for the Toddler Boy

Easy and unique Easter Basket ideas for toddler boys

Easy and unique Easter Basket ideas for toddler boys

Easy and unique Easter Basket ideas for toddler boys

Easy and unique Easter Basket ideas for toddler boys

I can still recall the excitement of waking up on Easter morning and running down the stairs to see what the Easter Bunny had brought me that year. It was usually a new top, or some make-up for my sister and I, and of course, lots and lots of candy! Peeps, Cadbury eggs, and jelly beans, oh my! Growing up, my mother always had a way of making every holiday feel like the most special event. And Easter was no exception! I’ve mentioned this before in my Valentine’s Day post, but I want my children to experience that same excitement on holidays that I cherished as a little girl.

This year for Easter I wanted to think outside the traditional “basket” and create a fun present tailored to my son’s favorite things. If you follow me on instagram or on the blog, you know my son, like many toddlers, is obsessed with trucks! This Green Toys dump truck from Calico Toy Shoppe on Bainbridge Island, served as both a special new toy and a basket. It’s also made of all recycled ingredients, so bonus! Julian is quite smitten with his Jellycat stuffed animals, we have too many to name! He sleeps with them and carries them all around the house. Jellycat is our go-to brand of stuffed animals because they are oh so soft, and just too cute. I picked up his adorable new bunny rabbit from our favorite children’s store, Barna and Co in Poulsbo.

The sweet Spring inspired book in Jules’ basket is also from Barna and Co. Our guy is a big reader, and I get him a new book every holiday. Besides, I am a sucker for mommy and me style books 🙂  I even added a new pair of the cutest slipper socks you ever did see! They are also from Barna and Co (told you it was my fav) and I just couldn’t pass them up. We have concrete floors at home and Jules is always slipping around in his socks while chasing after our pup. For the rest of the “basket” I added a few of Julian’s favorite healthy treats. And just for fun, I put a couple of snacks into Easter eggs for him to have fun exploring with rattling, opening and then eating them!

I hope that you can find some fun inspiration in here for your children’s Easter baskets! If you do, please be sure to let me know and tag me in your posts!  I love seeing friends try out Bainbridge Boheme projects. But more importantly, there’s nothing better than seeing the excitement of a holiday in your child’s eyes!

Whether you are attending church, or simply enjoying a bountiful supply of Cadbury eggs, I wanted to wish you and yours a Happy Easter. I hope you can find the time to slow down a bit and celebrate the holiday with a loved one.

Slipper socks: Melton from Barna and Co

If any of you have been through a remodel, you know what a slow process it can be! Jeff and I still laugh about how we thought our house would be finished before our September 2014 wedding. Talk about wishful thinking. While the construction may be complete, it has taken us some time to incorporate our home’s finishing touches. That’s why I was so thrilled to add some textiles to our bedroom. Plush Rugs has an incredible variety of rugs to complete your space, include rugs for kids and outdoor spaces. I loved that I was able to shop by dimension, style and color to really hone in on the look we wanted to create. I already have my eye on a few for Julian’s future “big boy” room.

We decided on a beautiful traditional, hand woven rug for our bedroom space. Feeling this soft rug under our feet first thing in the morning has been such a pleasant change from our usual concrete floors! I’m loving how our space feels more complete with such a simple addition. I even recall the Queen B of decor, Joanna Gaines from HGTV’s hit show Fixer Upper, sharing how textiles are the finishing touches that really make a room feel finished. Couldn’t agree more. There is just something about a rug that really ties a room together 😉

Also, I wanted to give you all a huge virtual hug for the love you showed us on our recent pregnancy announcement. I cannot wait to share more of this journey with you. I read each and every comment, and I can’t thank you all enough for the taking the time to wish us well.

Thank you to Plush Rugs for sponsoring this post!

I am so excited to finally share with you some big news! As you can see from my growing belly, we have a bundle of joy on the way! Baby Stephens is due this summer and we couldn’t feel more blessed. So many of you already guessed our news! You guys are good 🙂

This pregnancy was a bit of a surprise for us, since we had wanted to wait a little longer after having Julian to get pregnant. But sure enough, as soon as Julian decided he was done breastfeeding (just days before his first birthday) we got pregnant again! I have really really tough pregnancies, so truthfully, I was not looking forward to another pregnancy just yet; and this pregnancy has been no exception. I have been vomiting every day, mostly all day, with frequent visits to the Emergency Room for fluid hydration, and multiple anti nausea regimens. This goes way past the suggested treatments of ginger tea and Preggo Pops; trust me, I’ve tried it all. Early on in pregnancy, I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, just like I was with Julian. I want to clarify, hyperemesis is not “morning sickness.” This has been a debilitating illness that has left me basically bed bound for months. I could go on endlessly about this diagnosis, but I think I’ll save that for another post. But, just so you know, this why I have been MIA since Christmas!

We feel so fortunate to be expecting baby number 2, as our Julian Koki is our whole world. But, truthfully, this illness makes it challenging to acknowledge that it will all be worth it, especially on the worst days. Also, the idea of having 2 under 2 has me a little nervous! But I know in my heart this baby will be the perfect addition to our family. My baby, you are so loved by so many, and you hit the jackpot with the best big brother (and fur brother!) around!

Thank you all for bearing with me through this difficult and exciting time! I cannot wait to share this next chapter of our lives with you. We couldn’t be more thrilled!

Also, huge THANK YOU to my friend and photographer Ashley Loyer for editing these photos for me! My husband took them, but I am still learning my way around Lightroom. Thanks for helping out a friend Ashley!

When I set out to do this post, I wanted to share with you all our morning routine. It is so simple, but is one of my favorite times of day. I find that starting the morning out right makes a positive impact on my whole day. If I’m being really good, I wake up before Julian and write in my gratitude journal, even if just for 5 minutes. Then once the babe is up, things really get moving! I have worn this robe in a lot of my insta-stories and posts lately, and had quite a few questions about it! It is a Love Ophelia Serendipity robe in their lavender hue and I just love how feminine and detailed it is. It has become my morning wardrobe staple!

In regards to sharing our morning routine, like I’ve mentioned before here, I have been feeling really under the weather lately. So, I’m not about to pretend that mornings are a beloved time for me right now! Instead, I thought it would be fun to share 10 facts about me that you may not know. I love reading these little snippets on other people, so I hope you’ll enjoy mine!

  1. My dad accidentally introduced my (now) husband and I at a bar while watching a football game. Thanks Dude Pa!
  2. I was a vegetarian for 5 years after eating cow tongue in Argentina. I was a terrible vegetarian though, I gained about 15 pounds because all I ate was bread and cheese.
  3. My childhood best friends were twin boys from next door. Their mom taught me everything I know about baking.
  4. A few years ago I was a finalist to become a professional cheerleader. GO HAWKS! Insert hair flip emoji here.
  5. I have never hired a housekeeper, a nanny or a babysitter. Not that I’m against it. I’d just rather save that money for something more exciting, like shoes!
  6. I am a third generation nurse, and my mom used to always tell me I was born to be a nurse. I loved her textbooks so much as a little girl.
  7. Before becoming a stay at home mother to Julian, I was an Emergency Room Nurse at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Seattle. I have the utmost of respect for the men and women who have served our country
  8. I don’t talk about politics online, ever. I also don’t have a problem with those that do, I just prefer to save certain topics for face to face conversations.
  9. My husband and I got married in our backyard.
  10. My car was stolen twice when I lived in Seattle, and broken into more times than I can remember. It ultimately lead me out of the city and back to country life!
  11. I had mastitis 4 times throughout my breastfeeding year with Julian. But then he weaned himself with no fuss just 2 days before his 1st birthday. You just can’t win them all, but sometimes there’s a silver lining.

Okay, that was 11 things, I couldn’t resist. Share with me some of your fun facts!

Heidi
